We welcome pitches that make an Eastern cultural subject more legible without reducing it to a single image or claim. Proposals should suit general readers and show why a particular object, practice, text or place rewards closer attention.
What to propose
We are interested in clear cultural explainers, close readings, thoughtful comparisons and accounts of how a form or tradition has changed. A strong pitch names its subject and central question, identifies the intended reader and explains what context the piece will provide. Narrow subjects with a clear angle are easier to assess than broad surveys.
What makes a strong pitch
Show how the piece will handle place, period and variation, and point to the kinds of reliable material needed to support its claims. Flag uncertainty, contested interpretations or limits in the available evidence. Avoid sweeping claims about what an entire region or community believes, and do not send work that depends on invented expertise or unverified anecdotes.
How to send it
Send a short proposal through the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. Include a working title, a concise summary and a brief note about relevant experience or published work if applicable. A proposal is not a commission; please wait for a response before sending a full draft.
